Istron (Kalo Chorio)

In Hellenic, ''Kalo Chorio'' means ''nice village''. Istron is surrounded by the five most beautiful and delightful beaches of the Gulf of Mirabello. The natural landscape is reminiscent of the Riviera but the similarity stops there. Uncrowded beaches and only a few hotels make this Riviera a peaceful and relaxing location..

The village of Istron has been set up on the ancient town of Istrona. Excavated remains can still be seen. A “conservation order” protects the area and especially the coastline; this prohibits any new buildings. As a result the preserved natural landscape, the pebble beaches and beautiful sand provide the most relaxing and pleasant scene.

Istro is situated at the centre of Prefecture of Lasithi. The distance from the Airport and Port of Heraklion is approximately  75 km, which is about an hour's  drive  by  car, approximately 11 km  from the  Port    of Aghios Nikolaos, 15 km from Elounda (Spinalonga) , approximately 25 km from Ierapetra, the southernmost town in Europe, while Sitia, a town with airport, is approximately 65 km away.

Aghios Nikolaos

In Istro, no bustling tourist village, you can live alongside the local people and enjoy the exciting sounds of the Cretan life. The visitors will relax in the warmly welcoming atmosphere of the Greek tavernas and cafenions. There you can taste the famous hard dry Cretan bread (paximadi), "misithropites" and small plates with the mezedes such as dolmades, keftedes oder tsatziki. The shops in the village provide everything you might need on holiday.

The attractive beaches of ISTRON BAY are smooth and sandy, providing safe swimming also for children and a variety of water sports. Of course this beautiful place regularly receives the EU Blue Flag endorsement for clean water leaving you to just enjoy the water.

Excellent bus connections in all directions offer the opportunity to see much of Easternpart of Crete on day trips. If you rent a car, well worth seeing is:

Vai (Sitia), which is the only natural palm wood lined beach in Europe

The famous Minoan palace of Knossos

The Museum of Heraklion

 Lasithi platean with its windmills.

Vai Palm Wood

Another recommended day trip would be to Matala, where the ancient man made caves can be explored. If you have time, you can also visit Gournia, the ruins of a town overlooked by a small palace. This best preserved Minoan settlement dated from 1600 to 1400 B.C is located 15 km North of Ierapetra.

A visit to the Island of Chrisi 8 miles south of Ierapetra, the southernmost natural park in Europe reputed for the shallow crystal blue-green waters, the sandy beaches with the million of shells widely spread on them and the unique in Europe cedar wood, is strongly recommented.
